VICTORIA FALLS – A Harare bound CAG bus crashed into a herd of elephants at the Victoria Falls – Bulawayo road 40km peg in the early hours of Saturday.
Witnesses said that the early morning bus ploughed through a herd of elephants near Mbizha turn off killing one jumbo and seriously injuring two. Mr Mthelisi Tshuma who was aboard the bus to Hwange said the bus was extensively damaged but no person died.
“The bus was negotiating a bend towards the steep terrain of the road where the elephants were crossing. All of a sudden , there was a loud bang. It crashed into the herd badly damaging the front. One elephant was killed and two were injured,” said Tshuma.
“I never thought that a bus could kill a jumbo. I am amazed. The bus hit the elephants and dragged one of them for several meters. Most passengers came out unscathed save for one person whom I heard complaining of pains,” said a shell shocked Babongile Gumede who was traveling to Bulawayo.
Most passengers were grateful to the driver for controlling the bus as they conceded that it could have overturned judging by the nature of the steep terrain.
Efforts to contact the Parks and Wildlife Authority were fruitless at the time of going to press.
