Alleged gold smuggler Henrietta Rushwaya yesterday won the Zimbabwe Miners Federation (ZMF) presidency unopposed

Rushwaya was resoundingly endorsed by all provinces for a five-year term at the helm of Zimbabwe’s largest mining body.

She was announced president by the returning officer and ZMF chief executive officer Wellington Takavarasha.

The occasion was attended by ZMF patron and Mines and Mining Development Minister Winston Chitando, his deputy  Polite Kambamura and Minister of State for Mashonaland West Province Mary Mliswa, and ZMF leadership from across the country.

In her acceptance speech, Rushwaya said she was humbled by the trust and confidence placed in her by the miners.

She said she wants to rebuild the backbone of the nation and make sure that the ASM sector is aligned in the mainstream economy.

In October last year Rushwaya was initially charged with contravening the Customs Act after she was caught trying to smuggle 6 kilograms of precious mineral to Dubai via Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport. She is also facing charges of bribery and unlawful possession of gold.

More people including two CIO operatives and two senior police officers also arrested in connection with the scandal.
