Cyclone Chalane: Evacuations begins in Chimanimani.

CHIMANIMANI – Government has started evacuations  across Chimanimani district with residents being temporarily relocated to safer places ahead of the projected Tropical Depression Chalane that may hit parts of the country unless the flood changes its path.

The government has availed  ZUPCO buses, several tractors and lorries that are ferrying people and their belongings to two centres, St Patricts high school and Mutambara mission which have been identified as rescue and evacuation places.

So far first priority is being to survivors who are housed in holding camps while those in flood plane areas will be evacuated next.

Chimanimani District Development Coordinator Mr Joseph Manyurapasi said the preparations for the projected cyclone chalane are now at advanced stage with non food items already being distrubuted to various centres.

Most residents are still in shock and panic as this Cyclone comes barely a year after the district was severely hit by Cyclone Idai which clamed more than 340 lives.

They however expressed their gratitute to government for the early evacuations and for ensuring safety of their other belongings that may be left behind.
