HARARE – The Government has put in place measures to reduce congestion at road tollgates and curb road traffic accidents during the festive season.
Zimbabweans are looking forward to exciting times by reuniting with families and travelling for holidays during the festive season.
Prospects of delays on the country’s highways due to bottlenecks on payment modalities at tollgates often blights this festive mood.
Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Dr Joel Biggie Matiza had good news for motorists, with vouchers and prepaid cards expected to allow flawless passage at tollgates.
“By Friday we expect the National Treasury to give the green light for Zinara to accept USD payments and the motoring public can from now begin to purchase vouchers from designated agents. Prepaid cards are already in use and motorists can upload these from Zinara designated points”
The Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe also laid out a robust traffic awareness plan aimed at reducing road carnages.
“We are going to work with the ZRP in all the country’s ten provinces so that we raise awareness on the need to abide and observe road rules to reduce accidents,” Acting Director Operations Mr Enerst Muchena said.
Minister Matiza also noted that the Department of Roads will look to fix the detours along the Harare Masvingo highway set up due to the rehabilitation works underway, which have become impassable owing to the heavy rains recorded in the past few days.
