Victoria Falls bestows Freedom of the City.

Victoria Falls has bestowed the honorary Freedom of the City by President Emmerson Mnangagwa in recognition of his exceptional leadership and efforts in transforming the lives of the country’s citizens at a colorful ceremony held in the resort town today.
Over a century and half after Scottish Missionary David Livingstone become the first European to encounter the world’s most spectacular waterfall, Mosi-oa-Tunya and 31 years after the waterfall was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this popular resort town has now been elevated to a City.
As a way for saluting the statesmanship exhibited by President Emmerson Mnangagwa in maintaining peace and integration with the international community of nations, Victoria Falls City has granted the Honorary Freedom of the City on President Mnangagwa.
The Freedom of the City which was bestowed on President Mnangagwa is the highest civic honour a council can grant to prominent man or woman.
The new City took the decision to accord the honour to President Mnangagwa for his unwavering efforts in transforming the lives of the citizens of Zimbabwe and for the re-engagement drive.
The ceremony got underway with the unveiling of the Remembrance Plaque at the Victoria Falls City Council offices which was erected as a tribute to the sacrifices by the many cadres of the liberation struggle.
Victoria Falls Mayor Somvelo Dhlamini read the resolution to the conferment of the Freedom of the City before addressing the gathering.
He applauded President Mnangagwa for his contribution to the growth of the new city.
“We commend the excellent and visionary leadership by his Excellency Cde E.D Mnangagwa as shown by the efforts to improve the lives of the citizens of Zimbabwe underpinned by Vision 2030 which seeks to eradicate poverty,” he said.
After the reading of the warrant, there was the signing of the Freedom Roll by President Mnangagwa before the symbolic presentation of a casket made of wood with the City’s Coat of Arms in Colour mounted on the side.
President Mnangagwa was also handed the Freedom Key during the ceremony.

In his acceptance speech President Mnangagwa said the recognition goes beyond his own personal contributions but a dedication to many departed heroes.
“It is with utmost appreciation that I accept and receive this great honour of the conferment of the Freedom of the City of Victoria Falls. The conferment goes beyond the recognition of my own personal contribution but a dedication to the many living and departed heroes and heroines  of our liberation struggle.”
In their congratulatory messages, Speaker of the National Assembly Advocate Jacob Mudenda and Provincial Minister Cde Richard Moyo expressed gratitude for the President’s acceptance of the befitting honour.
The historic event was graced by many dignitaries who include President of the Senate Cde Mabel Chinomona, Leader of the Opposition in Parliament Dr Thokozani Khupe, Cabinet Ministers, senior government officials, Victoria Falls City Councillors and other invited guests.
The first Freeman of Zimbabwe’s newest city President Emmerson Mnangagwa has pledged his administration’s commitment to ensuring that the beautiful city emerges as a globally competitive tourism destination with world class facilities.
The honours now lie on the Victoria Falls Mayor and his team to ensure that they live up to the billing and meet the expectations that come with the new status.
