#Flashback/Did you know??

#Happyweekend Did You know Thomas Tafirenyika Mapfumo was born Michael Munhumumwe and only started using his current name at the age of nine. Mapfumo affectionately known as ‘Mukanya’ (a praise name of his clan totem) is immensely popular for the political influence he wields through music. He both created and made popular Chimurenga music and his slow moving style and distinctive voice is instantly recognizable to Zimbabweans. Mukanya worked with the late great Jonah Sithole to transcribe the sounds of the chief instrument of traditional Shona music, the mbira to the electric guitar. His chimurenga style of music influenced other great Zimbabwean musicians such as the Bhundu Boys and Stella Chiweshe. Mukanya is now based out of Oregon in the United States and still sings and speaks out about the problems of Zimbabwe.
