Herbert Majeke Releases Single Ahead Of Album Launch

By Ronnie Chisamba

Chitungwiza-born sungura musician Herbert Majeke (37) – aka Herbert Majeke Kangara – officially released his latest single track, Kudzinga Hope, on the first of this month ahead of the proposed launch of his 4-track album, titled Dzinochangamutsa, next week.

Kudzinga Hope is a Shona term that literally translates to keeping alert according to the context of the track. Perils of being docile and passive in environments that call for alertness are highlighted in the song “Ukabwaira waruza (if you blink an eye you have lost).

The release of the track is a result of working with a number of music studios. Drums and bass were recorded at Alick Macheso’s Alema Studios. Vocals and guitars were recorded at Hardsound – the company which employs Majeke as a sales representative while the mixing and mastering were done by Bothwell Nyamhondera at his Bon-Yam Studios.

A frontman for his band, Takashinga Stars, Majeka is not a novice in the music industry. His passion for music dates back to his primary school days at Zengeza 5 Primary where he was an active member of the school choir.

During his secondary school days, he was mentored by the popular music instructor, teacher, and musician Emmanuel Mujuru at Zengeza 1 High. Majeke was a common feature in the high school marimba band.

He embarked on his professional music career in 2003 and has released 11 albums to date. Over the years Majeke has shared the stage with celebrated legends and musicians like the late Tuku, Baba Manyeruke, Suluman Chimbetu, Leonard Zhakata, and Jah Prayzah.

Umbrella, Chibhebhi, Fiona, and Kachipunu are some of the hit tracks which propelled him to stardom and earned him airplay on the national television broadcaster and radio stations.
